Gone are those days when a designer's tools included a pen, brush, pencil, illustration board and exacto knife. Designers today are at the mercy of their ever-changing software suites. The designer will reach a point where he must upgrade his software or switch brands. And, the designer needs to understand how this new type of software functions. If the software changes, the requirements to relearn can be costly for design professionals. As well, there are usually varying graphic design programs used in specific tasks such as word processing, web page creation, drawing, and photography. For much of the last decade, the desktop publishing arena was ruled by Quark Express. Over the past few years, Adobe has been making a serious bid to regain its preeminence in desktop publishing with In Design. Adobe has already snuffed out many companies that were, at one time, considered competition. Assuming that they do intend to take out Quark, Adobe will become the 'top dog' in regards to graphic design software. At the end of 2005, Adobe concluded its acquisition of Macromedia which made it the owner of Dreamweaver - usually acclaimed as one of the best and sometimes the most difficult to use web design software available. Within the field of professional Web design, Dreamweaver has little competition. Microsoft offers Front Page, which is still used by non-professionals and a handful of professionals who have been using it for a very long time. Mostly though, Adobe, with the acquisition of Dreamweaver, has attained a semi-monopoly here as well. Adobe Photoshop is the clear forerunner in graphic design software for photographers. A lot of design programs exist for your computer and for the user, it is always important to know about these graphic design programs. Adobe has purchased a number of companies that used to offer Photoshop plug-in's of their own. To illustrate, could graphic arts software be used? Once again, Adobe comes out ahead with Adobe Illustrator which is recognized and used by most professionals and generally wins hands down against it's competitors. It is not always, the easiest to use program or the program which has the most functions. It is which one is the most compatible in the most places. Corel Draw, Canadian illustration competitor to Illustrator is acknowledged by many to be easier and have more functions - but the files are hard to use anywhere but with Corel. This limits across program functionality and therefore it's popularity. One of the main reasons InDesign is gaining ground quickly is because of the ease of use it has with all the other programs within the Adobe design family. You can move between them quickly and smoothly. You can buy all these programs easily at once by selecting Adobe's Creative Suite.
