Auto glass can be quite expensive to replace if you ever need to – thankfully, not every incident calls for such drastic measures, and in many cases it’s possible to revert the damage without needing to pay a lot of money for the procedure. It all depends on the exact extent of that damage though, and in some cases it’s inevitable that you’ll have to replace the whole windshield as it’s not possible to just repair it.

The basic thing you need to know is that auto glass is usually made in two layers, in order to ensure extra durability and resistance against damage. It’s designed in such a way that the top layer absorbs a large portion of the damage incurred in a hit, which means that in most cases the damage won’t extend to the lower layer. This, in turn, means that it’s usually entirely possible to repair the auto glass without having to replace the whole thing – an experienced professional can work on the damage area locally and fix most of the visible damage, restoring the windshield to its former state (or at least close to it).

Like we said above though, that’s not always the case and sometimes no matter what you do, it’ll be inevitable that you have to go for a complete replacement procedure. In this case, it’s important to know that you’re working with a professional auto shop which can get the glass replaced quickly and without charging you a lot of money for it either. It’s not uncommon for auto glass replacement to be among the highest-priced procedures at most auto repair shops, which is the main reason you should carefully compare all the different offers in your local area before deciding to use any particular one.

If you’re offered a deal on the auto glass itself from the shop you’ve decided to use, don’t be so quick to take it – look around to see if you can’t get a suitable replacement for a better price somewhere, especially from stores unrelated to the shop you’re using. If you provide the auto glass on your own, the repair shop should still be able to handle its replacement without charging you anything extra, and in case they try to make a fuss about it, this can be a warning sign that they’re trying to take you for a ride.

Talk to your insurance company too – there’s a lot you can gain from taking them up on this, because most auto insurance policies have some compensations available for auto glass replacement or repairs. While it may not always be possible to get any money from your insurance policy to use in the auto glass repair procedure, it’s still worth a try talking to the company and asking them what your current options are. You should at least be able to make use of some deductibles to reduce the final price of the repair, which may not be much in the context of the repair’s total cost, but it’s still some relief.
