There are plenty of things that can go wrong with a car from the cam belt to the battery to the alternator to the engine. Any one of these things can be highly frustrating and means that you might end up stranded in the middle of nowhere and having to pay money for both the replacement part that is brought for you, as well as the service of having it installed (even more if your vehicle needs to be towed).
Thus it is best to avoid these road side incidents as much as possible, or at least to be prepared to deal with them when they do occur. In the case of a spare tire, this is something that anyone could keep with them, that is highly easy to use, and that could prevent a range of problems on the motorway. As you can get used tires so cheap, it would then be easy for anyone who doesn't have a spare tire now to buy cheap tires that are used tires and to keep them in the boot or on top of the car.
A flat tire is a highly common problem. Of course this is because the tire is the crucial crux between the car and the ground. It is the tire that provides the friction that helps us to go forward, that turns in response to steering and that ultimately holds the car up off of the ground as well. It is constantly doing all of these things – bearing the weight of the car while being driven hundreds of miles, and while being often dragged over stones, potholes or debris. Avoiding debris on the road is nigh impossible and sometimes you have to let it go under your wheels or else you might cause an accident. This is the same as trekking across more off-road areas and any gravel or dirt track is going to have all manner of sharp upturned rocks to damage your tires. Worst of all though are the potholes – as these can affect anywhere and they come out in winter. Potholes are essentially the result of water falling into a crack or crater in the road, and then turning into ice which pushes open the pavement or tarmac and thus breaks it open to reveal a deeper hole. This results in a series of fairly deep holes being situated on otherwise normal roads and areas and these are responsible for many flat tires.
Thus a flat tire is a very common issue then, and it's one that can have a range of different consequences if it causes the car to be unable to move. For instance if you end up with a flat tire when on the way to a meeting, date or even just a social calling, then you can usually say with some certainty that you aren't going to make it on time (which always has repercussions in and of itself). At the same time this can be very dangerous if it is dark, cold, or if you are on a motorway, and often it can take a while to flag someone down to help. Carry cheap tires with you as spares and this need never be a problem and - a winch and some elbow grease you can very quickly have new tires in place to replace old damaged ones and in that moment you'll be very glad you did.
