Windscreens are an essential part of our cars, they are a safety device that protects us from debris, even in minor accidents. Windscreens are also essential to let us drive while still being able to see, otherwise at high speeds the wind in our eyes can simply make them water too much unless you have driving goggles of course. If your car doesn’t have a windscreen you could use driving goggles but this still isn’t advisable. Unfortunately a windshield though it protects us when in good condition and working can itself be lethal if it suddenly fails. A windscreen can fail at any time and usually will be hit by something to cause this such as a stone or wildlife, usually birds. A good windscreen though is designed so that when it is hit by small debris it will just crack or chip rather than shatter. The second time a windscreen is damaged though it already has lost its strength and so shattering is far more likely. A shattering windscreen when you are driving is very dangerous, it may not even need a big piece of debris to shatter it either it could be something small, a bump in the road or even just the wind blowing against it. When you are driving a long and your windscreen shatters it can really make you jump, unfortunately this often causes a serious accident, if you do keep control then getting the car slowed down and safely to the edge of the road will vary in difficulty depending on how fast you are going and which lane you are in.
So you may have got the message that a damaged windscreen should be repaired if you want to do your utmost to avoid an accident caused by a windscreen shattering, to be honest the small shards of glass though not life threatening can hurt a little too. So get a chipped or cracked windscreen repaired. What many people don’t realise with a chipped screen is that if you fix them quickly before the crack spreads you have a good chance of being able to repair the chip rather than replace the whole windshield. Another thing people don’t realize is that the repairers can come to you at your home or even work at a time to suit you and will only take up a few minutes of your time, barely even the time it take to fill up with fuel and you wouldn’t leave that until it’s too late. A cracked screen should be changed immediately, you should even maker an effort to look out for damage before it gets worse. For cracks look around the edges of a windscreen where it fits to the car, this is often where cracks start. The ease with which a crack can start is why you should only use a specialist auto windscreen fitter to fit a new screen. They will make sure it fits perfectly and has no damage: both could lead to cracking or shattering on your new screen. With the way a screen fits it must rest evenly right round or else the pressure on the screen may cause it to crack or shatter the first time you get up some speed.
