If you have your own home and are looking to fill it with furnishings then you have lots of options and there are plenty of home stores where you can stock up on cupboards, cabinets and more. The question is though, how do you go about finding the right piece for you, and how do you make this process a little cheaper? Well if you consider woodworking and making your own furniture, then you will find that you can start to fill your home a lot more cheaply and a lot more easily and at the same time you can make sure that the furniture you have is exactly the way you want it and is completely unique. Even better than all that though, is that through woodworking you learn a new skill and you get the incredible sense of satisfaction that comes from doing something so creative around the house.

Of course what puts some people off is the idea of starting a new hobby, and the worry that they wouldn't be able to do it or that they would do a poor job. This is a shame however, as actually woodworking is a relatively simple and accessible hobby that most people would be very capable of doing, and that lots of people would enjoy a lot as well.

To start with with your woodworking it would make sense to make something relatively simple to begin with. Something like a book case is a great place to start because it doesn't need to have any draws or doors. To make something like this you would need some wood supplies, a saw, sanding supplies, a woodwork workbench, pegs and wood glue. From here you would first want to plan your project and have the measurements you'll need in mind. From there you would want to saw the pieces of wood to the correct size after measuring them and using clamps to hold them in place on your workbench. You would then use your sanding supplies in order to sand down the edges and smooth them off to prevent accidents and to improve the look of the panels.

Essentially you would need five sheets of wood to create the sides, top and bottom and back, and you would then use some smaller pieces as shelves which you could fasten in place, or that you could make removable.

Then to hold your parts in place you would want to either make them fit together by carving the ends, or you would want to make holes and use wood pegs so that they slot together like a jigsaw. From there you would then need to use wood glue which would bond the pieces together and fasten them in place solidly. While the glue dried you would want to use the clamps to hold the pieces in place, and it would then be firm and solid enough to stand.

Lastly you might want to coat your wood in some kind of varnish after sanding down the surfaces with your sanding supplies. This would help to protect it, while also giving it that professional looking sheen.
