Using home security companies is a very good move if you want to protect your property and your belongings. It is a big mistake to keep your things in a home with no security or without the very best security – and not only do you risk losing your belongings or having your property damaged, but you also risk your own health and safety if someone is to break in and potentially harm you in the process.

Once you have used home security companies and employed the strategies and the processes they recommend to keep your property secure and under surveillance you can rest easy, but there are still things to consider and there are still ways you can further add to this feeling of safety or reduce the effectiveness of those implementations.

For instance, once you have installed your home security systems you also need to make sure that you keep them on at all times and that you keep them maintained. Home security systems are like any other technology – they can turn off and they can go wrong, so make sure that you have gone to lengths to ensure that this isn't the case.

At the same time what's also important is that you don't think that just because you have home security systems you can then be completely lax and careless in regards to your other security practices and measures. For instance you still need to make sure that you lock the doors and that you do everything else in your power to keep the place secure.

One good piece of advice here is to lock not only the doors but the windows. Many people forget to lock windows, and knowing this, this is one of the first things that many would-be trespassers will try in order to get in. Likewise lock all back doors and any other access points to your home.

You should also try to dissuade criminals where possible from breaking into your property. This then means making sure that it is clear that you have some security in place. A simple sign such as 'CCTV in operation' is a good way to achieve this as it will tell criminals that they are at risk of being caught if they break in here.

Conversely the flip side of this is making sure not to convey any information that might make them more likely to break in. Specifically you don't want anyone to know when you're out or when you're asleep so it's important to make sure that you create the illusion of a full property even when you're there. Putting lights on a timer is a good idea here, or just leaving on light on upstairs. If you are going away for a long time then make sure that you have arranged for someone to come around and to occupy your property for short times – turning on and off the lights, moving post that may have piled up visibly by your door and drawing curtains (otherwise half draw them so that they could be open or closed).

You should also make sure not to make it obvious you have nice things – this means not keeping your expensive iPad on the windowsill, and closing the curtains.
