Lasers are devices that can cut and mold objects using rays of light. The way this works is to increase the frequency of the light waves – high frequency meaning that it oscillates rapidly. This changes the property of the energy and makes it hot enough and powerful enough to cut straight through or into metal, plastic, wood and other materials. This is the same as a microwave but a higher frequency still, and it really is like something out of science fiction become real.
There are many benefits to laser cutting equipment and laser engraving equipment. With laser cutting for instance you have the initial advantage of being able to start at any precise location and move freely. If you try to cut a hole in a piece of metal for instance then, without using laser cutting equipment this would be very difficult. First of all it would be difficult because few things would be sharp enough and strong enough to cut through metal – as the knife would likely be metal itself. It would then also be difficult because the knife would have to start by penetrating the metal in the middle – it would not be able to cut through from the side or it would ruin the appearance of the item.
Next the knife would have to push against the metal without warping it or damaging it and that would again be very difficult as the metal would create a lot of friction, especially as the cut went deeper in. There would be limits to how small you could make a mark this way and the difference between one piece of metal and the next would make it difficult for this to be carried out in an automated manner by a machine line.
Thus it is necessary for laser cutting equipment to be used. Here the metal is simply lined up and a laser can be used to burn a hole straight through it. The laser can then be moved around as necessary to cut precise holes and shapes in the metal as required, and these will be identical every time it happens.
This is why laser cutting equipment is often used in manufacturing plants to help make and design cars, knives, computers and more. At the same time laser cutting equipment is so useful because the laser can be narrowed down to an almost microscopic point allowing it to be used to work on microprocessors and other things too small for ordinary equipment to be used.
Laser engraving equipment meanwhile works the same way but burns only partially into the material in order to engrave names and images. You have most likely encountered laser engraving equipment yourself if you have ever had a piece of jewelry engraved. This is one of the most common uses for laser engraving equipment and as well as being used again in manufacturing plants, laser engraving equipment is commonly used in jewelers both to make jewelry and to provide an additional engraving service for customers.
