A shared server is a cheap option for hosting a site as well as potentially some files and basic applications but being cheap doesn't make it good value. For people wanting sites that are not for business but hobby sites and sites run for enjoyment having a 100% up time and a fast connection for visitors to their sites is not that important. But even for people who make a little from advertising on their websites it may not be long before the cost of lost users outweighs the cost of more expensive servers. The problem with a shared server is that how fast the server is and whether it can actually keep up with the demands on it depends in part on other people's websites.
If someone else’s site suddenly gets some media exposure and has people flocking to it not only their website but also your website may go down. More likely you will just find your site slows down and this is, if ongoing, more important than you might think. There aren't many good indicators on a website of how trustworthy a website is. A good looking website can be set up in hours by people with the right skills. Load speed though is something that people are increasingly considering when deciding what they think of a website and the company behind it.
A dedicated or virtual dedicated server gives you much more stability in terms of the speed of services. If you are using a cloud server for running applications and file sharing across an organization or with clients then a dedicated server is advisable. A virtual dedicated server also known as a virtual private server may be suitable for some businesses, you do get guaranteed resources and can install your own applications but you may well be sharing a CPU. As Cloud computing develops and applications require more computing power this is important. In extreme circumstances another user of the server that your virtual private server is based on can abuse the system to the extent that they use up 100% of the CPU and cause a crash on your Virtual Private Server.
The advantages of either a dedicated server or virtual dedicated server that does have control over the use of a CPU is that you do get a guaranteed share of resources. This maximizes the usability of your site for customers but is also important for the efficiency of your staff.
If you are starting to use cloud computing you may find it very beneficial with staff able to access files and applications wherever they are and to be able to collaborate in real time with other staff and clients. For this to work though and be valuable it is important that applications are always available and load quickly. Applications on a cloud server must be as easy to use as any on a desktop and ideally easier. If a cloud sever is unreliable and staff have to download and backup files to make sure they can access them then the advantage is lost.
