Picking flooring for your home is going to be very much down to personal preference and what you and your family like. You will probably want something that looks good and feels good but before you decide think very carefully about the practicalities of different floor types and how they will look and feel a little way down the line.
Sometimes the popularity of carpet seems strange, especially in homes with pets and children. You may with carpets find that you are constantly cleaning them and generally the more luxuriant the less durable they are. If you go for carpet pick a color that doesn’t show the dirt and make sure it is Teflon coated: you may though even for rooms like living rooms and bedrooms want to look beyond carpet. You probably for some rooms won’t want tiles or stone: these can be cold and unpleasant to walk on, wood, though not as soft and warm as carpet, doesn’t get cold easily. Hardwood floors have many advantages but being warm and looking inviting and making rooms look inviting may be most important. If you do want some carpet still you can always use rugs along with hardwood floors. Rugs can easily be cleaned and mixing rugs and wood is a great look especially for the winter.
Hardwood may also be a good flooring type for high traffic areas and for rooms including bathrooms and kitchens: as long as it is well protected. Hardwoods can take a lot without getting damaged if they have been varnished or treated in some way. For kitchens and bathrooms waxing hardwood floors will stop moisture damaging them and also make them much less slippery. Tiles and stones such as marble or granite can be very slippery to walk on and also in the kitchen in particular have other disadvantages. In the kitchen items are often dropped sadly and this can’t be helped but some floors ‘react’ better than others. Tiles though popular in kitchens for being very easy to clean and mop can easily get cracked or chipped: there is then nothing you can do except replace them, if the same tiles are still available. Stones also can get cracked or shipped but at least chips are less obvious with stones that are not meant to look even, such as limestone, slate or sandstone. Wood can get dented but this is very rare with hardwood floors such as oak, maple and others. Hardwood floors are unlikely to show damage from things being dropped, eventually some scratches and maybe stains will show though. To a point wood builds character but then it starts to look a mess but the solution is simple. Hardwood floors can either be sanded down or for more substantial damage planed down, so that a brand new layer is exposed: this means floors can look as good as new again. A good hardwood floor can last for many centuries if regularly renewed and well cared for with protection such as wax or varnish.
