When you are designing your garden and getting garden landscaping that means going to garden centers and nurseries and finding the plants you want for your garden and it means designing how you want it all to look at your home.
However it's not just about how the plants from the nurseries are going to look when you get them there – it's also about how they are going to thrive in your garden, and how you are going to keep them healthy. At the same time it's about whether you are going to be eco friendly with your garden or whether you're going to let it all do what it wants.
When you get your plants from the garden centers or the nurseries, then you are going to find your plants are healthy having been grown by experts in controlled circumstances. Once you get those plants back home, it's now your job to take care of them and to ensure that they thrive and it's your job to decide whether to do that with an eco conscience or not. So how do you go about making sure your plants are healthy in an organic and natural way?
Essentially when you are keeping an organic garden this means that you aren't using chemical fertilizers or pesticides that are made from synthetic substances and would not be found in nature. These are things that can be somewhat damaging to the local wildlife and which can find their way through the food chain to affect the whole local eco system. Your job is to instead use natural pesticides and natural fertilizers in order to feed the plants and dissuade insects etc without introducing synthetic products.
So for instance that means using fertilizers made from naturally occurring organic material – this could be stinging nettles, it could be from a compost heap or organic trash can, or it can be bought from garden centers (just look for the word organic). Likewise you are aiming to kill pests using natural methods too. Things like egg shells broken and scattered around your plants for instance can deter snails and slugs as they are unable to walk on them.
However even better is to get rid of the wildlife you don't want in your garden by simply attracting their natural predators to scare them away and eat them. This way you are literally using the power of nature to keep your garden in check. So for instance you can keep a ladybird patch which is just a moist area of long grass, and this will mean that they pray on aphids and ants that can damage your plants.
When you get all this working you end up with a tiny microcosm of the greater ecosystem working in your garden and this is a truly amazing demonstration of the power of nature. It also means you will end up with more animals in your garden and that you can rest easy knowing it's all good for the planet and the local animals and plants.
