Car accidents can be avoided if you follow traffic rules and safety measures. However, safe driving is not a foolproof way of staying completely clear of accidents since a lot depends on the other drivers on the road as well. So, it is always a smart idea to be prepared for the worse and know what to do when an accident occurs. This will also help if you are not involved in the accident but happen to be on the scene of other accidents.

One of the first things that you should do is to keep still and not move too much because you never know if you have been injured severely. However, if the fuel has begun to leak or if you can find sparks from the engine, then get away from the vehicle as fast as possible because car explosions do take place when accidents occur. If there is no looming risk of an explosion, move as little as possible until medical help arrives because you can end up aggravating your injuries.

You have to make two important calls – to the police and to get medical help. The third important call will be to your car insurance company. A case needs to be filed in a lot of cases in order to obtain insurance. You will also have to establish the party who is at fault. Police take stock of the situation and note down important details such as registration numbers of the vehicles and the damage caused. These details will help you strengthen your insurance claim.

If your injuries are minor and you are in a condition to move, make note of the names, addresses, drivers license and telephone numbers of all parties involved in the accident. Besides the two parties involved in the collision, you should also make note of any third party who might be injured in the accident or suffered damage to belongings. You should also include details of witnesses because they are very helpful in case a lawsuit results out of the crash.

Another important thing in case your car is damaged and cannot be moved is to call the towing service and have the vehicle moved off the road. You will not want to block the road and cause inconvenience to other drivers on the road. Try to disperse off the crowd and get the road clear as soon as all details are noted and the police and medical help has arrived. Make all efforts to see that the road is clear for other vehicles to pass.

Finally, the most important part is never to discuss the details of accidents with anybody but the police and even then, only the minimal information. Do not own up mistake, even if you are in the wrong. It can act against you later on. Allow the police to take stock of the situation on their own. Usually, after the accident, your thinking can be a bit disorganized because of the shock. You might end up saying something completely undesirable. So, keep shut.
