There are a range of different digestive disorders that each require specific digestive treatment. Common among these is Crohn's disease which can cause 'colitis' or the inflammation of the colon, along with inflammation throughout the rest of the digestive tract (which includes everything from the mouth to the esophagus to the stomach to the rectum). This inflammation can be patchy and will act in different areas in different severities thus meaning that the symptoms and the severity of those symptoms can vary from patient to patient and meaning it can be sometimes hard to diagnose.
Symptoms however are many and varied and can include weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, blood in the stools, urgency, confusion, stomach pain and particularly to touch, cramping and more. Crohn's disease in many cases is self limiting and will go away over time. In other cases however it can be a chronic and long lasting ailment with no cure. Surgery for instance is not an option with Crohns treatment as the area it affects are so diverse – removing the colon for instance would not stop inflammation in other parts of the intestines. However surgery might be used in order to remove some particularly problematic parts of the digestive tract where useful.
There are many other Crohns treatment options and these include changes in diet and lifestyle which can help to address symptoms or the cause. Exercise for instance can help to increase energy, while a change in diet can help to improve your body's ability to digest food. Meanwhile anti-inflammatory treatments can be used in order to treat the swelling directly and thereby alleviate some discomfort and improve function, though treatments such as corticosteroids may have negative side effects and so these are generally not used in the long term for treating the swelling. Other individuals opt to use alternative methods of treatment which can include acupuncture and herbal remedies. The use of probiotics has also been suggested to be effective.
Many things can increase the chances of developing Crohn's disease and these include a family history – there has been demonstrated to be some familial link and if a brother or sister has Crohn's disease then the chances of developing it increase. Likewise smoking is also a serious risk factor and smokers are twice as likely to suffer from the condition as non-smokers.
Crohn's disease is most likely to occur in the ages between 13-29 and then 50-70 and is relatively common. Unfortunately it can also lead to a range of complications as it affects the body's ability to absorb and use nutrients and the failure of the immune system can result in more infections and illnesses etc. Antibiotics may be used in order to treat infections that can occur as a result of Crohn's disease. In children Crohn's disease is likely to cause stunted growth and developmental problems unless Crohns treatment is used. It is important to use treatment early as possible in order to reduce the amount of complications that can arise from it.
