There are lots of things that affect the health of your teeth. Perhaps most important is making sure that you visit a dentist regularly and doing so will help you to ensure that your teeth are straight, white and impressive. If you need cosmetic dentistry then a quick visit to a dental clinic can do that for you, while going to a dental clinic every few months will ensure that any problems are caught and dealt with early and that you don't end up with your teeth falling out before anything is done about it.
One of the other important things though when you are trying to keep your teeth healthy is your diet, and maintaining a good diet can be the difference between rotten teeth that fall out when you bite into candy floss, and strong ones that look great and could bite through steel.
When you visit a dental clinic they will usually give you some lifestyle advice on how to maintain your teeth and keep them looking and feeling healthy, and this will often include a lot of advice regarding diet. Here we will look at some of that advice so you know where to start.
Eat Less Sugar
First and foremost the secret to better teeth through diet is to eat less sugar. When you eat sugar the bacteria in your mouth turns that glucose into energy and this helps it to survive. A by product of that process is plaque and this is what causes your teeth to decay and what causes abscesses and other problems. It's very important to use a careful diet to avoid this happening so you don't end up rushing to the dentist to have your teeth pulled out.
Eat Less Acid
Likewise acidic foods are also bad for your teeth. These include things like apple juice and orange juice, but worse are things like Coca Cola. Of course juice drinks are good for you and you shouldn't cut them entirely out of your diet – just be sure to moderate your intake and to be careful how much you consume. The problem is that the avidity in these drinks wears away your protective enamel and this can end up leaving your teeth more susceptible to plaque and other issues.
Eat More Fiber
Fibrous foods are things like apple skins, whole grain bread and certain cereals. These are the foods that pass straight through your system undigested and without being broken down by the acids in your stomach and in your mouth. In your mouth that means that the small fibrous particles can end up working like tiny toothbrushes and scraping against your teeth to remove plaque and other things while you eat.
Drink More Water
Lastly you should also drink more water. This not only washes away things and dislodges bits of food trapped between your teeth, but it also helps to encourage the flow of your saliva which is a natural mouthwash and that will help to prevent the build up of bacteria as well as fighting bad breath.
