If you have great teeth and you go to a dentist for dental care regularly then you are likely to find that you end up smiling a lot. Of course the more you are pleased with your teeth, the more you are going to want to show them off to the world and the less you will try to hide them. Conversely for those with less attractive teeth who have maybe put off their visits to the dentist it might be normal practice to try and avoid situations where you have to smile or to try smiling with a closed mouth where possible.

You might not think that this is a big deal, and you might think that going to the dentist is about getting fillings and having problems fixed, but then this would be to greatly underestimate the power of the humble smile, which can help to improve your life in a myriad of ways the more you do it. Here we will look at why smiling is so important and why it can help you get by in life.

First of all, when you smile you feel better. This is something that is an effect studied by scientists and researches – that is, when you smile, your body produces more happiness hormones and this is a process known as 'facial feedback'. The same is true if you are frowning – you'll feel in a worse mood. So next time you feel angry, stressed or upset, try pulling a big confident smile and then see how it transforms your mood. You will notice that you feel much better and elated.

So if you have better teeth and you smile more in public then you will find you feel better. But at the same time this dental care will also mean that other people smile more too. You see the more you smile the more other people smile and that will cause them to feel better too. At the same time though you will also cause them to feel better simply by observing you smiling. The reason for this is something called 'mirror neurons'. These are neurons in our brain that fire when they see someone else do something. So if you witness someone smile, then those neurons fire and you feel happy. Likewise if you see someone frown then you feel sad. This is an evolutionary trait probably designed to help us get by as a social species, and it means that the more you smile the more you bring a little sunshine into other people's days.

That then means that you get more people smiling at you too – and that means that suddenly the world seems like a happier place after dental care because suddenly everyone around you is grinning more. Then, because everyone around you feels good about themselves, that means they start to associate you with feeling good and wanting to spend more time in your company thereby meaning you are more likely to succeed in relationships and careers. And studies have shown that people who are happier and more positive – which you will be if you smile more – are more likely to succeed and even less likely to get ill.
