Ulcerative colitis is a particularly unpleasant form of colitis that is caused by the body's own autoimmune system. Here the body has 'turned' on itself and has caused inflammation as a result. Of course in ulcerative colitis that inflammation is focused on the colon and it takes the form of ulcers.
If you suffer from ulcerative colitis then this will result in several symptoms. You are likely to experience for instance lethargy, diarrhea, weight loss, nausea and stomach pains (particularly to touch). This is a problem then that you should address, and fortunately there are several ulcerative colitis treatment options available to you.
The first ulcerative colitis treatment that doctors will recommend to you will be to improve your diet and lifestyle. Although the cause of ulcerative colitis is not thought to be linked to diet, improving the diet by increasing intake of fibers and water may help. Your doctor might also prescribe you with antibiotics to help prevent related infection. Likewise the ulcerative colitis treatment options include anti-inflammatory drugs that aim to reduce the acute and thereby alleviate the symptoms and improve function. Corticosteroids are very popular in this capacity, however you must bear in mind that they also come with side effects.
One of the other ulcerative colitis treatment options is autoimmune therapy – immunosuppression or biological therapy. This is used in order to try and prevent the body's immune system from attacking the colon and thereby preventing further damage.
In extreme cases doctors will recommend colectomy which is the complete removal of the colon or parts of the colon that are ulcerative. This is considered a cure to the condition though of course it comes at a price and the colon does play a role in digestion and absorption – helping to absorb water, salt and some other water soluble nutrients.
If you wish to take more subtle approaches to your colitis treatment then ulcerative colitis alternative treatments are also available. While evidence is not always forthcoming to support the use of these methods, they rarely cause any side effects and there is a lot of anecdotal support in some cases. Probiotics for instance have been found to be very helpful in helping to improve your colitis and can help to improve the number of good bacteria in the intestines used to help digest food. These can be bought in stores over the counter and often come in the form of yohurt drinks. Fecal bacteriotherapy meanwhile is the infusion of human probiotics via fecal enemas.
Herbal remedies and natural treatments include fish oil which contains EPA and which can inhibit leukotriene activity thought to affect inflammation, and brassica – a form of fiber containing soluble constituents that are thought to be able to reverse ulcers throughout the digestive tract. Others will use accupuncture which aims at improving the condition through the use of small needles that aim to alter the flow of 'Qi' energy throughout the body's 'chakras'. Different things will work for different people and it's important to look around for the best treatment for you.
