There are countless different types of insurance from car insurance to volcano insurance in some countries. Of course you could take out countless insurance plans and protect yourself against every single outcome but this would quickly get expensive – some insurance policies simply aren't necessary for you and won't likely come in handy. It's your job then to make sure that you know the different types of insurance and can protect yourself against the things that are relevant to your lifestyle.
One kind of insurance that you might not have encountered previously is 'critical illness insurance' which can also sometimes be referred to as 'critical illness cover'. This is a type of insurance in which the insurer is contracted to pay a lump sum of cash in the case that an individual shold be diagnosed with what is classed under the policy agreement as a 'critical illness'.
In other words, this is not life insurance that you take out when you are already critically ill, which is what some people mistake critical illness insurance for – rather it is insurance to protect against becoming critically ill. This is a very important form of insurance to consider as the financial strain of critical illness can be huge for a family and particularly if it is dragged out. In many cases the cost of a critical illness will be much harder for the family than the cost of a death in the family.
When you lose a primary earner in a family to death this is of course a highly expensive occurrence and it will mean that you are left with your income halved or cut off completely. A family is then forced to look after themselves and pay for all the usual costs of living but without any income or with substantially less. In the case of a critical illness the exact same thing happens – the party with the critical illness will of course be unable to work and that then means that the family is left with half of the income.
At the same time they will be forced to pay for health care and while health insurance will cover this there are sometimes other costs involved – you might have to pay some money towards it, or towards aspects not covered by your health insurance and thus you need all the help you can get from critical illness insurance. You will also be traveling a lot to visit the ill family member and that means both petrol costs and time. In the case of a death you would be able to take on extra work as the surviving family member, but with critical illness you will be required to visit the patient in hospital or care for them around the home. There are government benefits that can help to shoulder some of this cost, but they will not be nearly enough to allow you to continue with the same standard of living. For this you will need critical illness insurance which will fund your family for that period.
